In Tandem : Trine Søndergaard & Nicolai Howalt

Below is a selection of images from husband and wife team Trine Søndergaard & Nicolai Howalt's latest collaborative work together Tree Zone. Working independently from one another, be sure to also look at their individual works. We first met the couple and saw their series How To Hunt in person at their opening at Bruce Silverstein a few years back. They effortlessly continue to impress and inspire us. Trine will be having a solo show of her work at Silverstein next May.

Tree Zone by Trine Søndergaard and Nicolai Howalt is a photographic exploration of the Nordic landscape and ways in which we relate to it. Thematically and formally this work is a continuation of previous projects How To Hunt, Dying Birds and Hunting Ground.

In a series of images the artists have captured the barren landscapes found in areas along the Nordic timber line during winter. In this marginal land you see solitary trees weighed down by snow. The trees are bent and stunted by their harsh environment. Human forms may appear, but they seem insignificantly small within the vast, white nothingness.

The images represent a humanization of nature: Trees figure as human symbols in a series of 'tree portraits' together with larger panoramic landscapes in monumental formats. In this way a suspense is created between immense, impenetrable space and singular, isolated trees.

These large, colourless images tell a story of defiance, of surviving in spite of ruthless conditions, of being part of a world that you can not fully control or know.

The Summer Show Project : Foley Gallery

We were pleasantly surprised to learn today that we will be included in Foley Gallery's first Summer Show Project.

The Summer Show Project offers the unique chance for artists to work directly with the gallery, creating new work to be curated in a group exhibition.

The curatorial panel who decides the theme of the show includes Thomas Allen, David Carmona, Lisa Hostetler, Jun Lee, Denise Wolff and Jessica Dimmock.

Artists included will be:
Billie Mandle, Steve Smith, Renhui Zhao, Tribble & Mancenido, Jens Windolf, William Rugen, Bahar Yuru Koglu, Phil Jung, John Saponara, Joshua Martinez, Maria Ines Manchengo, Sa Schloff and Bill Finger.

It's a very interesting way to work directly with a gallery while also working on your own group show. We look forward to it's outcome and working with Michael Foley watching the process unfold. The show will be up next June, so stay tuned. We can't wait to make new work!

Another Week In Review : Ponnonica, Ina and Coleman

Finally saw the documentary The Jazz Baroness about the Rothschild heiress who left the life she knew for her platonic love of Thelonious Sphere Monk and all things jazz. We had no idea and wonder where/what jazz would be if she weren't around, or who would have taken her place. A must must see!

Acquired this lovely print by fellow photographer Ina Jang from her opening of 'world' last night at The School of Visual Arts. You can purchase a print and view the work here. Part of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to VISIONS for the blind. Great cause, great work, and perfect for the holidays!

His 105th brithday recently passed, and we have been consumed with his music as of late. Coleman Hawkins is one of the greatest tenor saxaphone players. I have listened to this particular song many many times in a row....it makes my heart smile. Enjoy!
