In Tandem : Los Carpinteros

Los Carpinteros are Cuban artists whose works begin with playful and thoughtful watercolors which then often unfolds into sculptures and installations.

For Los Carpinteros, drawing has played an integral role as a mock technical draft or form of a blue print that suggests not only a process of artistic elaboration but also a form of architectural or carpentry plans.

The Havana-based collective Los Carpinteros (The Carpenters) has created some of the most important work to emerge from Cuba in the past decade. Formed in 1991, the trio (consisting of Marco Antonio Castillo Valdés, Dagoberto Rodríguez Sánchez, and, until his departure in June 2003, Alexandre Arrechea) adopted their name in 1994, deciding to renounce the notion of individual authorship and refer back to an older guild tradition of artisans and skilled laborers. Interested in the intersection between art and society, the group merges architecture, design, and sculpture in unexpected and often humorous ways. They create installations and drawings which negotiate the space between the functional and the nonfunctional. The group's elegant and mordantly humorous sculptures, drawings, and installations draw their inspiration from the physical world—particularly that of furniture. Their carefully crafted works use humor to exploit a visual syntax that sets up contradictions among object and function
as well as practicality and uselessness.

2 Days, 7 Farms, 12 Farmers

Our shoot upstate was exactly what we needed... two days off the road and away from our current (trucking) culture which revolves around our capitalist consumption. They say the revolution will not be televised but they also never said it would be so green. Our generation is taking back what's ours while trying to give back without any inclination of greed. The future is in our hands and it's as simple as a handful of dirt.

It's more than gratifying to work for a publication that gives you stories right up your alley. We spent two days in beautiful upstate New York with good friend/writer/stylist Jason Jules learning about, meeting, and taking portraits of young farmers who are the new generation of food growers cultivating a sustainable way of life. The youngest of the farmers was 22 yrs old dedicated to local farming and real, well-grown, unprocessed food. We picked eggs whose hens hatched that same morning and learned about permaculture, a brilliant way to use land without damaging it, harboring natural energy without the dependency of fossil fuels.

While we thought we knew much about where our food came from and why we eat organic and local, our experience on these farms took us on a journey as if experiencing Michael Pollan's words in real life. It made us miss upstate, and the simplicity of life (or at least what it can and should be).

And if you're ever in the area, be sure to check out and support these friendly farmers:

Sisters Hill Farm - Stanfordville, NY

Off The Road

Getting ready for our two day getaway/assignment upstate. It will be a nice change from the pavement of the rough road to finally be able to immerse ourselves in a natural environment. Here's an old portrait we made while we were living up there almost two years ago.

TOKYO!

Michel Gondry, Leos Carax, & Bong Joon-ho

In TOKYO!, three of the world's greatest filmmakers come together for an omnibus triptych examining the nature of one unforgettable city as it's shaped by the disparate people who live, work inside one enormous, constantly evolving, densely populated Japanese megalopolis - the ravishing and inimitable Tokyo.

Triptych, rhapsody, psychogeography, omnibus, urban valentine, freak show, mindwalk and many other things....

Got to see this, huge Gondry fans!

Road Research

Been doing some research for an upcoming editorial shoot we have in upstate NY. Will be nice to get off the road for a few days and be up there again. Can't wait to drive around the good ol' neighborhood. We found some interesting and cool sites from all the googling and linking that we've done and just wanted to share.

Envisioning Information, Small Multiples

Photobucket
So very happy to stumble upon great thrift finds! On a recent stop home we found this book, Envisioning Information by Edward R. Tufte. It's a wonderful book with beautifully illustrated examples of displaying information. A chapter of the book which intrigued us the most is Small Multiples.

Photobucket
excerpt from Small Multiples

At the heart of quantitative reasoning is a single question: Compared to what? Small multiple designs, multivariate and data bountiful, answer directly by visually enforcing comparisons of changes, of the differences among objects, of the scope of alternatives. For a wide range of problems in data presentation, small multiples are the best design solution.

After reading the chapter and seeing the examples we couldn't help but think of photographers who show their work in a similar manner.
