Choosing to still do editorial assignments while on the road full-time may seem folly on our part... but who can resist shooting?! We ask for a month's notice being that at any given time we don't know where we'll be and are already forgetting what state we're in. Since we only use film, sending our negatives off via FedEx was by far the most difficult thing we've done since we set off on our journey. We constantly see FedEx trucks pass us on interstates and used that to comfort our worries that it will get to our lab safely and on time.
In the past two years we've gone through three photo labs. Working closely with someone at a lab who chooses to lab-hop puts us in a precarious situation. Not knowing who is developing your negatives is a problem. Not having ever stepped foot in that lab is a bigger problem. Since we've created a relationship with this individual for over two years now, we put our faith entirely in their hands, hoping they finally chose a great lab to root themselves in. Nerve-racking... but at the end of the day it all worked out well. Along with the help of dear friend Michael Kwiecinski (amazing fellow photographer) who gets truck loads of love from us!
We haven't touched the negatives and probably won't see them for weeks, even months later. Though right now are working in shifts with final scans just so we have our hand in part of its final stages. While one is asleep, the other works through the night. Pretty amazing how many things one can accomplish in their vehicle while on the road....

Oh, Red Wing!

One of the greatest things about what we're doing is being able to collect stories along the way, each giving way to a new piece of our American history. Upon fact-checking and learning all we can about who, what, and where we are about to shoot with the help of Google and Wikipedia, we came across more than we bargained for... suppose we all do, which just leads us stumbling upon interesting facts, myths, and legends alike. Above are our few and fascinating finds!

Little Town, Big Shoes

Norman Rockwell for Red Wing Shoes
"Since the first pair of Red Wing boots came off the line in 1905, the Red Wing Shoe Company have grown into one of the most respected manufacturers of hard-wearing footwear around. Made in the U.S. to an exceptionally high standard and quality, there's no denying these are superbly made shoes, popular with everyone from the U.S. military to motorcyclists and lumberjacks, and rightly so."
The tiniest town with the biggest and warmest welcome, we had another amazing photo adventure in Red Wing, MN. An unforgettable evening at the Elk Lounge with Mr. Jason Jules.... with no bottles around to boot!

Dave on the Fuel Crisis
Last night in Missouri we met the most clever Dave and his horse riding past the local fuel station in protest to rising gas prices. He stopped driving his car and began traveling by hoof to save money and was on his way to camp out somewhere behind the station. Here's to Dave and his horse in helping end our dependency on foreign oil! Travel safe Dave!

Through Our Windshield
We were in Mississippi earlier today, now in Missouri and waiting until morning to continue our adventures once more. On our way to Iowa and hoping to be in Minnesota by Wednesday. It's an interesting thing to live out of one's vehicle. It becomes home, though your personal bathroom is spread out from state to state between rest areas, restaurants, and gas stations. You get used to it. Since we won't have any official images to show for some time....we've decided to start posting all the randomness of our journey 'through our windshield' with the tiniest digital camera there is!
Enjoy....it's true Americana!

Somewhere in Houston with Edouard

Woke up to heavy rain hitting our roof as our new tropical friend Edouard decided to join us on our journey. We spent the night in our vehicle after devoting our entire wknd waiting for it to get fixed for the third time and hopefully the last for a while. Kind of glad we got the breakdown out of the way earlier on in our travels rather than later. Hoping to make it out of this and head north, we'll keep you posted!
